Basecamp is no stranger to provocative marketing.

So it’s no surprise that when Apple rejected their new Calendar app,

Their founders didn’t hesitate to share the story publicly.

Apple also rejected their original Hey email app back in 2020. And they responded the same way back then.

I’m not saying Basecamp was hoping to get their app rejected. After all, it apparently messed with their original launch plan. But in both cases, when life gave them lemons, they made some pretty good lemonade. And found an opportunity to generate more buzz for their app.

This isn’t an easy strategy to replicate, but a good reminder that even when a launch goes off the rails, there’s often a silver lining somewhere.
